PRESS RELEASE

Thursday 19 January 2017, the Hungarian Academy, the Galleria André and the Galleria Mucciaccia present a major etrospective of Valerio Adami curated by Lea Mattarella.
With 50 works from 1972 to the present day, the exhibition is a tribute to a great Italian artist, more well-known abroad rather then in his own country.
Born in Bologna in 1935, Adami lives for many years between Paris and Montecarlo, spending his holidays in Meina, on Lago Maggiore. He exhibits in the main museums of the world and his works are in important collections: Musée d’Art Moderne de la ville de Paris, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Center Georges Pompidou in Paris, Museum of Art Modern Royal Palace, Milan, Museum of Modern Art, Pittsburg, Mc. Crory Corporation, New York. Adami works also with very prestigious galleries (Marconi of Milan, Maeght of Paris and Saint Paul de Vence, Malborough of Montecarlo, New York, Madrid); he participates in international exhibitions such as Kassel’s Documenta and the Venice Biennale in 1968, 1978, 1995 and 2011.
The exhibition includes some significant moments of the painter’s artistic career, divided into three locations: the most recent works are exhibited in the spaces of the André Gallery and the Galleria Mucciaccia, while historical works are found at the Hungarian Academy.
Between via Giulia (where the Hungarian Academy and the André Gallery are located) and Fontanella di Borghese (where Galleria Mucciaccia is situated), it will be possible to discover Valerio Adami artworks; large format paintings and important drawings which are fundamental to understanding his poetics and his technique. The drawings always represents the base, the starting point of Valerio Adami’s paintings. In fact his paintings are the result of the relationship between sharp, thick lines and colours, well defined in clear backgrounds, prominent.
Observing the drawings side by side, it is possible to see traces of numerous alterations necessary for the infallible image creation, and the painting that is drawn from it, thus allowing to understand the mental and emotional path made by the artist. On paper, the artist he elaborates a theme, a vision, which he develops working with a pencil and a eraser, following the flow and
association of thoughts, memories, conscious and unconscious reactions. Adami then transfers the structure of the composition onto the canvas and begins the inventive game of colours, which will give the emotional tone and the complete meaning of the work. These are two autonomous creative moments but closely linked by a dialectic of internal relationships.
The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue, Italian and English, illustrated (Cambi Editore) with an essay by Lea Matterella, an interview with the artist by Christophe Penot, and a selection of writings by philosophers, intellectuals and authors including Italo Calvino, Jacques Derrida, Maurizio Ferraris, Carlos Fuentes, Michel Onfray, Octavio Paz, Antonio Tabucchi.
